As some of you may have noticed, Cyclogz’s estimates for cumulative ascent and descent can some times be wrong. Most notably, the difference between actual vs our computation could be way off for non-barometric GPS units like Edge 205.

Cyclogz currently uses a smoothing average algorithm to smooth out the data and then compute the cumulative ascent and descent. This algorithm is soon going to be replaced with a better algorithm. When that is implemented, all rides will automatically be adjusted. I will keep you posted.

By the way, my friend Sanjay is working on analyzing the problem and coming up with an improved algorithm.

Safari 4 Update

To get the Garmin Communicator Plugin working with Safari 4, please remove “Flip4Mac WMV Plugin.webplugin” from the /Library/Internet Plug-Ins folder on your Mac, and then restart Safari.

Upload Problems on Windows

Thanks to one of the cyclogz users, we found that upload don’t work with the latest Garmin Communicator Plugin (version 2.7.1) on Windows machines. We are working on a fix.

Update: Please download version 2.6.4 of the plugin from http://www8.garmin.com/products/communicator/ to resolve this problem.

TCX Uploader 1.1 Released

Today, I released a major upgrade to the TCX Uploader to uploader .tcx files to Cyclogz. This version more closely mimics the user experience that you see while uploading via a supported browser. This version also supports those Linux distributions that have Adobe Flash and AIR support available.

Ride Replay (Experimental)

Over the weekend, I added a couple of features to Cyclogz. The first one is to let you change mile marker interval from 0-10 km/miles. The second feature, which I had more fun to write, is ride animation. This feature is experimental and unpolished. I will be working on improving it in the next week or so.

To see this in action, go to any ride page on Cyclogz, and click on “Animate” below the map. This will start ride replay animation. For the best possible experience, instead of starting the animation on the ride page itself, first popout the map, enlarge the popup window, and then start the animation. If you prefer, increase the zoom, and switch to satellite mode for a closer look at the surroundings.

Update: Fixed a minor bug with ride animation in IE.

Safari 4 Breaks Garmin Plugin

We noticed yesterday that, after installing Safari 4 beta corrupts the Garmin Plugin, Cyclogz will not be able to load logs from your GPS. It turns out that the Safari 4 installation process itself corrupts the Garmin plugin. Here is how to fix it:

a. If your default browser is Safari, change it to some other browser such as Firefox

b. Close/quit all browser applications

c. Reinstall the Garmin Communicator Plugin

d. Then use a non-Safari browser to upload your logs.

These steps work on Mac OS X. We do not know yet know what happens on Windows XP or Windows Vista machines. if you have any info, please let me know.

Geotagging Updates

After half-a-day of prototyping, and a another half-a-day of coding, I updated Cyclogz to geotag all my riding pictures. The process is quite simple:

Set the camera to the local timezone, and take pictures.
Update ride logs from Garmin Edge/ForeRunner to Cyclogz.
On the ride page at Cyclogz, select to add photos. This will ask you to authorize Cyclogz to access Flickr account, if not already authorized
Cyclogz will search user's public photos that match the ride, and geotag them automatically!

All 600+ photos that I took in 2007 and 2008 are now geotagged, and can be browsed on the map at http://www.flickr.com/photos/subbu_allamaraju/map.

Updated Upload Process

This week, I rewrote the upload page to make the upload process more intuitive and interactive.

One major change you will notice is that you can now edit the ride title on the upload page itself. Just click on the ride title to edit it on the upload page.
