Elevation Smoothing

by admin on January 18, 2010

Apologies for a long hiatus. I spent a good part of 2009 writing a book related to my day job, and had to give up cycling for most of the second half of 2009. I am back again, picking up things from where I left off in 2009.

Here are two new features:

  • Elevation smoothing, to further reduce noise in samples: After experimenting with the SRTM data, I found that SRTM’s sampling frequency is too sparse, particularly when the route is not along latitude or longitude lines. In some cases, the results were super inflated. Consequently, I settled on a low-pass filter.
  • Cadence: If your Garmin has a cadence sensor, you should be able to see cadence charts now.

Elevation Corrections Coming Soon

by admin on June 8, 2009

As some of you may have noticed, Cyclogz’s estimates for cumulative ascent and descent can some times be wrong. Most notably, the difference between actual vs our computation could be way off for non-barometric GPS units like Edge 205.

Cyclogz currently uses a smoothing average algorithm to smooth out the data and then compute the cumulative ascent and descent. This algorithm is soon going to be replaced with a better algorithm. When that is implemented, all rides will automatically be adjusted. I will keep you posted.

By the way, my friend Sanjay is working on analyzing the problem and coming up with an improved algorithm.

Ride Replay (Experimental)

March 9, 2009

Over the weekend, I added a couple of features to Cyclogz. The first one is to let you change mile marker interval from 0-10 km/miles. The second feature, which I had more fun to write, is ride animation. This feature is experimental and unpolished. I will be working on improving it in the next week [...]

Geotagging Updates

December 27, 2008

After half-a-day of prototyping, and a another half-a-day of coding, I updated Cyclogz to geotag all my riding pictures. The process is quite simple:

Set the camera to the local timezone, and take pictures.
Update ride logs from Garmin Edge/ForeRunner to Cyclogz.
On the ride page at Cyclogz, select to add photos. This will ask you to authorize [...]
